Books for Libraries, Inc began in Southeastern Pennsylvania by James Stitzinger, Jr. As a librarian and academic bibliographer, he quickly realized that many libraries lacked the resources needed to meet current objectives. A strategy of the judicious purchase of quality used materials and equipment alongside new purchases could both stretch a library’s resources and accelerate its development. This strategy becomes exceedingly attractive in helping libraries meet various deadlines placed upon them by institutional growth or administrative and accreditation requirements.
The focus of Books for Libraries, Inc began with providing opening day collections to theological seminaries and Bible colleges. It soon spread to providing general studies collections and liberal arts collections as well. Our collections include previously owned libraries and carefully developed collections in various subject disciplines. Out of this came the need to provide quality used shelving, which has received wide interest among academic, public, and special libraries throughout the world. Providing libraries with immediate access to modern shelving at reduced prices is a great benefit. Books for Libraries, Inc was born in response to the needs of emerging schools and developing libraries for solid book collections and quality used shelving at reduced prices.
Because of James Stitzinger’s wide exposure as a developer, the areas of library collections and buildings, consultation services for academic libraries in collection development, automation and other technologies, and library building design were added.
Since 1985, Books for Libraries, Inc., under the guidance of James Stitzinger, has been involved in creating or enriching the holdings of hundreds of libraries in America and in many countries worldwide. Our used shelving division has saved over 500 satisfied libraries thousands of dollars on their shelving needs.
James Stitzinger has an M.S.L.S. degree from Drexel University with specialization in library architecture and collection development. He has been an active librarian for 24 years. He developed the collection and building for the library of Calvary Baptist Seminary from 1976-87. and served as Director of Library Services for The Master’s College and Seminary (1987-2005) in the Los Angeles area where he developed two separate collections, which currently total 300,000 volumes after just 17 years. He also designed and oversaw construction of a 33,000 square foot library and office facility for The Master’s Seminary which was completed in 1998. He is currently serving as a consultant on several major library collection development and building projects.
